PET vs PP Food Containers: Which One Should You Choose?

If you package food for a living, the choice between PET and PP comes up on almost every order. Both are food-grade, both are widely used, and both have a clear place. Knowing which one fits your product saves you money and prevents the kind of packaging problem that reaches the customer. Here is a straightforward guide.

What PET is good at

PET, or Polyethylene Terephthalate, is prized for one thing above all: clarity. It is glass-clear, which puts your product on full display, and that visibility sells. A layered cold drink, a box of dry fruit, a tray of assorted sweets all look their best through PET.

PET is also lightweight, holds its shape well, and is recyclable, carrying resin code 1. It suits cold and ambient use: beverage glasses, clear containers for snacks and sweets, hinge boxes for bakery and takeaway, and punnets for fresh produce. Where presentation matters and the contents are not hot, PET is usually the right call.

What PP is good at

PP, or Polypropylene, trades some of that clarity for strength and heat resistance. It handles hot food without losing its shape, which makes it the material for curries, gravies, and syrup-based sweets like rasgulla. It also seals reliably, so it holds up through delivery.

PP is the choice when the contents are hot, oily, or wet, or when the container needs to take more handling. Meal trays, round food containers for sweets, and injection moulded containers for hot takeaway are typically PP.

A quick way to decide

Ask two questions about your product. First, does presentation sell it? If a customer buying it wants to see it clearly, lean PET. Second, is it hot, oily, or wet? If yes, lean PP.

Most food businesses end up using both, PET for the cold and the clear, PP for the hot and the sealed. There is no single winner, only the right fit for each product.
